Since 2013, the UK’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has operated the RRS Discovery, named in honor of the legendary vessel commanded by Robert Falcon Scott on his South Pole expedition.
This state-of-the-art oceanographic research vessel has been specifically designed to operate in the most demanding environments, capable of operating in Sea State 6 and ice conditions. She is equipped with advanced technologies that make her an exceptional scientific platform.
Her main capabilities include seabed mapping with single-beam and multibeam echosounders, seismic survey operations, ROV deployment, seawater sampling, and deployment of measurement systems such as CTD and ADCP.
The vessel’s design incorporates special features such as dynamic positioning, azimuth propulsion, extensive handling systems including high-capacity cranes, A-frames, and winches, as well as modular climate-controlled laboratories that allow flexible configurations for virtually any type of mission.
