Keel laying of new vessel for Greenpeace International at Freire Shipyard

On 3 July 2025, Freire Shipyard laid the keel for Greenpeace International new flagship. The 75-metre sailing vessel, with almost 2,000 square metres of sail area, will be equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that will include hydrogen fuel cells and engines capable of using methanol as fuel, which will significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels and minimise its carbon footprint.

The construction of this sailing vessel, which will become the organisation’s new icon, demonstrates that it is possible to expand maritime capacity while drastically reducing the carbon footprint. This new vessel, built by Freire Shipyard in Vigo to the highest environmental, sustainability and human rights standards, represents the cutting edge of environmentally responsible shipbuilding,” says Fabien Rondal, Deputy Director of Greenpeace International’s International Programme.

We are proud that Greenpeace International has chosen Freire Shipyard for the construction of its flagship. It is an honour for us to participate in a unique project in the world, which integrates multiple energy sources in its propulsion system with the aim of significantly reducing the use of fossil fuels and minimising the ship’s carbon footprint,” say Marcos Freire and Guillermo Freire, general managers of the shipyard.
